Eagles win 4th straight NFC East Title

The Eagles Offense led by Donovan McNabb struggled early to find a rhythm.  Down to their back-up's back-ups at both guard positions, the Eagles had trouble handling the Giants D.  But that all turned around in the second half, which has become a pattern as of late for the Birds.  Led by Brian Westbrook the offense took hold in the second half.  The Eagles D, played well keeping pressure on Eli Manning, eliminating Ike Hilliard and Amani Toomer from the game.  Only the Giants Jamaar Taylor could get deep on the Eagles who had 2 catches for 102 yards.

Coming out of the locker room the Eagles virtually dismissed the 4th straight NFC East title although they did sport the hats and the t-shirts.  They know they haven't really won anything and they know they are on a higher mission.  The next goal, to get home field advantage and more importantly that first week bye in the playoffs.  Winning the NFC Championship would be next... and of course Jacksonville.  The End Game.  But Reid doesn't let them get ahead of themselves.  Next week is a tough Green Bay team, and Reid will have his team well prepared for the Packers who will be coming off of a short week.  (4 out of the last 5 Packers games have been settled by 3 points or less!)

Now on to the recap:

Andy Reid Watch

Andy Reid was saved another week from wearing tights as Terrell Owens was held to zero touchdowns.  But Reid has made the right adjustments once again at half-time, sparking the offense to score 20 points in the second frame.  Reid found a way for Owens to get involved in to the game in the second half.  Owens was held to zero catches in the first half for the second week in a row.  On the defensive side of the ball, the move of Trotter to the starting position has really solidified the run defense.  And I can only guess he motivated Darwin Walker and Corey Simon this week as both had a good week.

The Eagles 27-6 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday November 28, 2004 captured the 4th consecutive NFC East title, a team record. The victory also allowed Andy Reid to get his 66th victory (including playoffs) which moved him into a tie with Greasy Neale for most victorys all-time. Andy Reid also has an amazing winning percentage (.671) during the regular season with .660 overall. This was Andy Reid's 100th game. ... .

HOAGIES -- Stars of the Game

  1. RB - Brian Westbrook -- 127 yards in total offense with 2 scores (1 run and 1 pass).  Having a healthy Westbrook sets the team a part from the rest of the conference.
  2. QB - Donovan McNabb -- Although Donovan didn't have a stellar day, there were certain plays on the field where Donovan shows why his one of the most dangerous players in the league.  Another week with a passer rating of over 100 (107.4) added 30 yards on five carries with a touchdown for his performance today.
  3. DT - Corey Simon -- A come-back game for Simon who had lost a lot of minutes to Sam Rayburn and Hollis Thomas.  He had 1.5 sacks with 5 tackles on the day.  He dropped Taylor for an 8 yard loss on an end around after planting Eli Manning on to the Meadowlands turf on Taylor's 2nd 50-plus catch.
  4. DE - Jevon Kearse -- The Freak had a huge game, knocking down 1 pass, registering a half of sack, but creating pressure to force Manning to make some hurried throws, and get in to position to be sacked by others.  But the biggest play of the game was the Blocked punt which the Eagles turned into 7 points.

KRIMPETS -- Soft players of the Game.

  1. WR - Todd Pinkston  -- Although, Pinky had 3 catches for 75 yards including a 50 yard catch early in the game, Pinkston earned a Rickey Watters "For Who For What" award today, for twice, not figihting for a ball.  Once giving up on a ball when he was about to be hit by 2 defenders.  And on another route where he was supposed to run back towards the middle, sat back and waited for the ball, while the Giants Will Allen broke for the ball and almost made the interception.  It's plays like this that could lead to turnovers.  And Turnovers can make or break you.

Keep an Eye on'em:

DB - Quentin Mikell -- Covering the big Jeremy Shockey, as a 5' 10" defensive back is a difficult task, as the Eagles have had a tough time keeping Tight Ends out of the End zone as of late.  But Mikell got good position on the Shockey and had some help by Eli Manning under-throwing the fade route, to pick up his first career interception. The second year safety has started to get significant time in nickel coverage this year.

Numerology-- Key Stats

  1. 6 -- The number of points allowed by the Eagles defense.  This is the second week in a row that the Eagles have held an opponent to no touchdowns (the first time since 1990.)
  2. 10-1 -- The Eagles are 10-1 for the first time since 1980.   The Eagles went on to the Super Bowl that year...
  3. 14 -- David Aker's hit his 14th 40-plus Field Goal, breaking Team Record of 13 held by Paul McFadden in 1984

Cheesesteaks -- Key Plays

  1. Quentin Mikell's interception in the second quarter while covering Shockey was a HUGE play.  Donovan McNabb had fumbled on the previous drive and after a 52 yard pass to Taylor, the Giants were ready to put the ball in to the End Zone and take the lead.   This was a real turning point in this game.
  2. Terrell Owens had a catch early in the 3rd quarter for 24 yards that was mostly RUN after catch which helped set up an Eagles field goal.  Later, Owens had 2 more catches setting up Westbrook touchdowns.  The guy even when he's not scoring he's helping the rest of the team score.
  3. Jevon Kearse's 3rd Quarter blocked punt which Hugh Douglas recovered set up the Eagles first touchdown since early in the second quarter.  The Touchdown allowed the Eagles to go up 20-6.

Wooder Ice -- Licks of the Game

  1. L.J. Smith   At the end of the first half, laid a block on #39 Deloatch from the Giants during a Westbrook catch that was short of the first down.  Replays show that it was a block in the back.  Devastating nonetheless.
  2. Jeremiah Trotter Another great performance from the middle linebacker today.  He hit Eli Manning just as he was running out of bounds after a 3 yard scamper.  The Eagles Game Book says that he was "pushed OB by Trotter" oddly enough, but anyway.. he was given a nice pop as he touched white in front of the Giants bench.  Giants fans may remember when Trotter laid a lick on Punter Jeff Feagles in the first meeting between the teams.  Trotter who was caught up in the middle of the Giants bench, had to dance out of the mess as he was getting pushed around by the bench, until finally Barret Green had enough and popped Trotter causing another flag on the play and the penalties off-set.  Trotter got more of the admonition from the Fox crew, although Collinsworth alluded to the Ron Artest incident, I think he felt Trotter was instigating the "retaliation".  Later the Fox Studio crew, led by Howie Long, felt that the Trotter penalty was not a unnecessary roughness, as Howie told of Trotter's importance to the team.  A Gold Star to Howie Long, from HammRadio!
