McNabb and Eagles cruise to 9-1

After a short week following a Monday Night victory in Dallas, the Eagles weathered the storm following the T.O./Nicollette Sheridan controversy.  The opening half was filled with penalties and poor play, typically found after a short week of preparation.  The Eagles will face the New York Giants next week in the Meadowlands, and will have a chance to clinch their fourth straight DIVISION title in only the 11th game of the season with a victory.  That kind of effort is dynasty-like.  Regardless of the weakness of the division, to win 4 straight anything would be remarkable.  Of course, to Philly fans right now, that is merely a yawn.  There is only 1 victory any fan cares about.

Now on to the recap:

Andy Reid Watch

Andy Reid has followed Monday Night games with a 4-3 record coming into this game.  Reid who has been questioned in some games not able to make adjustments during a game (Steelers) or getting his team prepared off emotional victories (Carolina following Green Bay in the playoffs last year), has overall done a good job keeping this team focused outside of the distractions from the Media.  Only one team has ever gone undefeated, and that is out of the question for this year.  Rarely do teams lose only 1 or 2 games in a season.  But this season, each week, it becomes clearer as to the class of this football team and of course how bad the division is.  The Eagles escaped a let down this week, despite turning the ball over and making stupid penalites.  But the offense continues to put up points and the defensse had a fine showing this week.

Andy Reid has improved his career record to 65-34-0.  A victory next week against the Giants will move Big Red into a tie with Greasy Neale as the all-time winningest coach in Franchise history.  Andy should surpass him at some point this season.  But to think about it, folks, it is just amazing.  Just amazing.  That's why I keep the picture of Andy with the Packers uniform, to remind us all that he was the Birds 10th or 11th choice to run this team.  Certainly Dick Vermeil took a team to the SuperBowl during that time.  But what Reid has done in Philly is nothing short of remarkable.

HOAGIES -- Stars of the Game

  1. QB - Donovan McNabb -- McNabb played great today.  In the first half he struggled throwing an interception and fumbling, but it was moving around with his legs and his confidence that allowed him to take the team back in the 2nd half.  McNabb finished with 4 Touchdown passes.
  2. RB - Brian Westbrook -- 105 yards in total offense with 2 scores on passes from McNabb.  Westbrook hit the holes hard and looks to have recovered from this chest injury.
  3. MLB - Jeremiah Trotter -- Trotter filled up the middle with seven tackles leading the defense to hold Clinton Portis to only 37 yards on 17 carries.

KRIMPETS -- Soft players of the Game.

  1. CB - Lito Sheppard  -- While no receiver had more than 39 yards receiving, Lito's costly holding penalty on the Redskins opening drive, kept the Skins alive as they continued downfield to take a 3-0 lead.  A small play with huge consequences, but it was an indicator of the greater problem of the short week.

Keep an Eye on'em:

RB - Thomas Tapeh -- With an established veteran team like the Birds, rarely to young players get a chance to play, let alone to shy.  Tapeh did get a chance to run the ball in mop-up duty and had 1 carry for 9 yard but was only able to get 5 more yards on 3 carries.  Running back is still a question for the birds once you drop off from Westbrook.  Dorsey had some nice runs up the middle, but you don't want him carrying the load.  But can Tapeh?

Numerology-- Key Stats

  1. 13 -- Terrell Owens touch down catch in the 3rd Quarter gave the birds some breathing room and it put him into a tie for the all-time lead in Touchdowns in a season with Mike Quick (1983) and Tommy McDonald (1961 and 1962).  By the end of the Season could very well get near the NFL mark of 22 which is held by Jerry Rice (1987).
  2. 9-1 -- The Eagles are 9-1 for the first time since 1980.   The Eagles went on to the Super Bowl that year..
  3. 9-69 -- The Eagles played very sloppy to open the game with 2 penalties that helped the Redskins keep drives alive for scores.  The Eagles were penalized 7 times in the first half.  They clamped it down in the second half.

Cheesesteaks -- Key Plays

  1. Donovan McNabb after completing a pass to Todd Pinkston who had a very nice day as Owens was held to 2 catches for 24 yards, lined up with 10 seconds on the clock to stop the clock, and put the Eagles in Field Goal range.  Unfortunately he lined up behind the left guard, which drew a flag and by rule caused 10 seconds to run off the clock ending the half.  Not getting the Field Goal here, hurt and could have cost them the game.  Maybe next week they can paint a big yellow sign on Fraley's butt.
  2. Terrell Owens had the attention of the entire world on him this week and rarely was open.  The Redskin corners did a great job of shutting him down, unfortunately they couldn't completely shut him down as he scored with 3:11 left in the 3rd Quarter as he ran a post pattern for the score.  Later in the forth, he laid a nice pick as Westbrook followed him into the End zone for the touchdown that sealed the Redskins fate.  Owens presence on this field has been huge for this team.

Wooder Ice -- Licks of the Game

  1. Jerome Trotter  wrapped up Clinton Portis all day, but on one play up the middle he wrapped Portis up and spun him down like a Belly-To-Belly Suplex from Magnum T.A..
  2. Jevon Kearse registered the only sack of Ramsey which came in the fourth quarter. I was so turned around on the play by the camera work, it almost looked like Ramsey was driving into the Eagles zone except he had the goaline at his back..
