Forget About Donte Stallworth

Can we all let Donte Stallworth go? Fans who are hate Eagles management (Lurie, Banner, and Reid) claim the lack of offer to Donte Stallworth as a lack of dedication to winning the Super Bowl. Others call it cheap. At the most base level, yes, the Patriots improved and the Eagles got worse. But it's not as simple as that.

Under the salary cap structure, you have to be more concerned with HOW you spend your money and why. And if a player is NOT worth his VALUE, then you shouldn't pay him. Donte Stallworth is NOT worth what the Patriots paid him. He's just not.

Let's look at his numbers. In his 12 games last year, he caught 38 passes for 725 yards. Not bad, right? Well, will give him the benefit of the doubt by looking at his averages per game. And we'll even give him the benefit of removing the last game which he didn't play past the first series, after the Birdsfound out that they won the division.

So in those 11 games, Stallworth averaged 3.45 catches per game for 65.9 yards. His yards per catch was really good at 19 yards per catch. Put those numbers are NOT number one wide receiver type numbers. Further, he only caught over 100 yards 3 times. So let's look at his numbers in non-100 yard games: 8 games, 22 Receptions for 334 yards. That averages to 2.75 catches for 41.75 yards per game. Those are Greg Lewis type numbers.

In fact lets look at GLew's numbers when he was in the #1 and #2 role in 2005. In 13 games, Lewis caught 48 passes for 561 yards. Averaging 3.69 catches per game. That's more than Donte did when you dont' take out his best games! Lewis is not a burner like Stallworth so the big play is not there. He only averages 11.68 yards per catch. But we already new that.

Now the Birds have gone out and signed Kevin Curtis. Is that a good thing? We shall see. He's not a burner like Stallworth is. But he catches the ball. But a Wide Receiver is not going to make or break this team this year. And we won't miss Stallworth.
