2004 Week 3: Phillies Weekly

Editors Note: Each Sunday Night Inside the Dugout will give you the wrap-up on this week's baseball season.

Florida handled the Phillies again this week in very close exciting ball games. Is it a case of believing you can't win? Or is it merely a case, that Florida is just a better team? Perhaps a little of both. But at least there is time to get back on track before facing the fish again. Clearly the hits will come as they did the first 2 days against the Expos, but it's the ciritical hits (2 outs, runners in scoring position) that is MOST critical.

What's Next?

This week the Phillies head to St. Louis for 3, and come back home for 3 with the Diamondbacks.

What if the Phillies won yesterday?

Had the Phillies won yesterday, they would have erased the Marlins sweep, and pulled them within 3.5 games of first and only 1 game under .500. Now the Phillies are sitting in 3rd 3 games under .500. But don't forget it's a LONG season.

Bowa Watch

Okay, so Bowa pitches Wagner 4 straight days, and what happens in his next outing, blown save.

Felske-esque Sub-Par Servicable Wild Card Bound Excellence

Black Cherry Wishniak -- Best Players

  • Bobby Abreu -- What a week, if only we played Montreal every week. Batted .426 and drove in 6 runs. Had 3 doubles off the WALL and 1 Homer against Montreal. Only scored 3 runs despite 12 hits!
  • Ricky Ledee -- Batted .556 (4 for 9) and drove in 4 runs, with a big 2 run homer that gave the Phillies a lead against Florida on Wednesday night in the bottom of the 8th.
  • Jim Thome -- Average dropped down to .278 while overswinging it seemed on some pitches against Montreal this weekend. But he did score 7 runs this week. with 3 homers and 4 RBIs.

Soft Pretzels -- Weak Players

  • Pat Burrell -- After tearing up the first 2 weeks of the season, only batted .167 this week. He also looked bad doing it, looking as confused as last year. Bowa sat him in place of the hot Ledee on Saturday which was the RIGHT move.
  • Billy Wagner and Tim Worrell -- Not a great week for the Closer and the Setup man. Wagner gave up a homer to Lowell on Wednesday night when the Phillies were ahead getting his first blown save. Worrell had 2 and third innings this week with a 7.71 ERA.
  • Brett Myers -- Really got knocked around by the Marlins, giving up 7 runs in 6 innings against the fish.

Scrapple -- Key Stats and Plays

  • 3 homers -- To Mike Lowell, he was on Wed night, broke the game wide open with a big hit against Billy Wagner to tie the ballgame. Phillies ended up losing in extra innings.
  • 0-6 -- The team has lost 6 straight this year again. They don't play them until July, so hopefully we can right this ship by then.
