Story Summary
The Phils sweep the Mets and climb 2 games back of the playoffs. Yet, nationally, they are disrespected.
|
Then Chase Utley came back. And the Phils beat the Mets 9-2. On Tuesday, The Phillies come back from behind in the 8th inning to tie the game on a ball hit just 45 feet from home plate. Later, Ryan Howard hits a 2 run homer as the Mets walk-offed losers. Wednesday night, the Phillies clung to a 1 run lead, and a former Phillie second baseman interferes with the back up 2nd baseman and costs his team the tying run and the game. Phils win in dramatic fashion again.
But perhaps there was no more dramatic of a win than Thursday's day game. The Phillies took the early lead, 5-0. The Mets clawed back to tie. The Phillies played small ball and scored 3 more runs. Then in the top of the 8th inning the wheels came off and the shaky bullpen pitched like they were on top of shifting tectonic plates. The Mets score 5 runs in the inning and Phillies fans begun to wail and gnash their teeth.
Then balls started to drop in. Werth used his speed to capture two bases, putting himself in scoring position with 1 out. Then Iguchi makes contact. Gillick haters can hate all you want, but that deal saved this season. You can take all the "busts" and throw them out the window. Iguchi steals 2nd, forcing Randolph's hand. (Credit Lopes here.) He walks Rollins. And it's time for Chase Utley. Chase has been hitting 2nd since his return. Burrell has done a nice job in the 3 hole and Manuel didn't want to shake those things up. He was up at the right time, in the right spot. (Credit Manuel here.) Utley's basehit will go down in Phillies lore, with Mitch Williams walk-off in extra innings in 93, Duncan's mother's day grand slam. Mike Schmidt's 10th inning homer against the Expos. Del Ennis' Pennant winning homer.
It will be important to Phillies fans. It will be more important if they go on to make the playoffs. This team will be remembered. This game will be remembered. But the National publications, have chosen to bury the lead.
As reported on Beerleaguer, the 6pm Sports Center led with 7 minutes of highlights from the Yankees-Sox game. Although, the news story of the Phils game has sat in the top spot most of the day, the video highlights for the Yankees sat #1.
On CBS Sportsline, they called the game in the Bronx, the "Game of the Day".
On FoxSports, the front page doesn't mention the Phillies, only the Yankees. But the MLB page puts the Phillies/Mets series 5 down.
On SI.com, the Phillies story is 7th, 2 behind the Yankees.
On Google News, the Phillies story sits behind a Nationals Dodgers preview!
At least the New York Post knows what story is more important.
So nationally this game was NOT as important as the Yankees who still sit 5 games back of the Red Sox, but they now lead the Wild Card. But they have got a lot of help from the Mariners who seem to be collapsing. But the Phillies are climbing out of the hole they dug themselves and should be getting the attention they deserves.
