Former Coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Nick Skorich passed away after an infection following heart-valve surgery. Skorich was the Line Coach for the Eagles from 1958-1960. Following the NFL Championship season of 1960, Coach Buck Shaw retired. Hall of Fame Quarterback Norm Van Brocklin claimed that he was promised the job when he was traded to the Birds before the 1958 season. The job was handed to Skorich who matriculated at Cincinnati and played 3 seasons on both sides of the ball for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In Skorich's first season for the birds, QB Sonny Jurgensen led the team to a 10-4 record. At the time the NFL would pit the 2nd place teams from each conference in a game called the "Playoff Bowl". The Eagles faced the Detroit Lions at home in front of a crowd of 25.612 at Franklin Field. The Birds lost 38-10. This after beating the Lions IN DETROIT 2 weeks earlier (27-24).
Skorich posted a record of 3-10-1 in 62 then followed that season with a 2-10-2 record in 63. Skorich was placed with Joe Kuharich who was the General Manager at the time. Skorich later coached the Cleveland Browns from 1971-1974 with 2 playoff appearances.
